Blanc Loves: Wonderful Wedding Cakes

Buongiorno brides and grooms! Besides the ceremony and the first dance, what is the most memorable (and delicious) moment of a wedding? The cake cutting of course!

Choosing a wedding cake seems much easier than it actually is. There are all different kinds of cakes and trends are constantly changing. New ideas are always coming from the most famous cake designers. Factor in the cake tasting (usually the grooms’ favorite wedding-planning moment) and choosing a cake is suddenly very, very hard!

The location of your wedding used to dictate what type of cake you would have based on the local specialty. However, today’s globalization gives couples a much broader range to choose from. From the traditional Italian “millefoglie” to the traditional American tiered sponge cake covered in frosting and fondant, the choice is yours. The last few years have pushed the rustic style “naked cake” to the forefront of wedding trends. The naked cake is simply an American tiered cake, frosted between the layers and left bare on the outside, creating a naked effect.  It can be decorated with fresh flowers or seasonal fruits, guaranteeing a rustic, country-chic style.

The traditional Italian “millefoglie” is made of delicate puff pastry. It is then layered with pastry cream. It’s is a popular choice here in Italy, as it is extremely delicious! Decorated with soft powdered sugar and fresh berries, it really is impossible to resist.

Another recent trend in the last few years is the preparation of the millefoglie by a master pastry chef. It is constructed in front of your wedding guests right before the cake cutting. It’s a unique idea that lets everyone participate, making the moment even more memorable and intimate.

The choices of wedding cakes are vast, yet one constant remains: that tradition is respected. One tradition holds that the bride and groom must save the top tier or first slice of their wedding cake. They should carefully freeze it and then eat it on their first anniversary. Saving the top tier and eating it together on your first anniversary is said to bring good fortune to your marriage.

Here are some of our favorite wedding cakes, whether traditional Italian or American-style!
